And the child

Christmas Wish

Author unknown

It was Christmas Eve and the lord looked down from above at all His children. It had been nearly two thousand years since the birth of His son and turning to His youngest angel the Lord said: "Go down to the earth and bring back to me the one thing that best represents everything good that has been done in the name of this day." The angel bowed to the Lord and spreading his wings, descended from heaven to the world of man, all the while contemplating his mission. So much had been done in the name of honoring the birth of the Christ Child. For this day, wars had temporarily ceased, cathedrals had been built and great novels had been written. With so little time, what could he possibly find to represent all this?

As he soared above the earth, he suddenly heard the sound of church bells below. Their tone was so beautiful that it reminded him of the voice of God. Looking down, he saw a small church whose bells were ringing out the carol, Silent Night. As the final note died away, it was replaced by one lone voice singing inside the church. It was shortly joined by a second voice that embraced the first in perfect harmony, and then another until a choir of voices rose through the night. Enchanted by the magic of what he was hearing, the angel found himself listening until the song was finished. As he resumed his flight through the night, he was delighted to hear these sounds everywhere, from the largest cities to the smallest villages. He heard melodies from massive orchestras and in the voices of single soldiers alone at their post. And any place where he heard these songs, he found hope in the hearts of men.

Grasping a song out of the air, he held it in his hand (angels are able to do this) and thought that maybe, these songs could be the one thing that best represented Christmas. They seemed to give voice to man's greatest joys as well as hope to those deepest in despair. But, though at first glance it appeared to be the answer he sought, his heart told him that this music alone was not enough. There had to be something more. So, he continued his flight through the night until he suddenly felt the touch of a father's prayer on its way to heaven. Once again looking downward, he saw a man who was praying for his child whom he had not heard from in a long time and who would not be home that Christmas. Seizing upon the prayer, the angel followed it until it reached the lost child.

She was standing on a corner, in a quiet snowfall, looking very small in a very large city. Across from her was an old city bar, the kind that only the lost seemed to know how to find. The patrons of this establishment rarely looked up from their drinks and so seemed not to notice the young woman. Now, the bartender in this bar had been working in there longer than anyone could remember. He believed in nothing except his bar and his cash register. He had never married, never took a vacation and as matter of fact, had never been seen out from behind his counter by most of his patrons. He was there when they arrived and he was still there when they left. He gave no credit and for seventy-five cents, served shots of un-watered whiskey to people who used their drinks like a moat around their lives. For them, he provided a safe, unchanging world.

Suddenly, the door opened wide and into this world walked a small child. The bartender could not remember the last time that a child had been in this place, but before he could ask the child what he was doing there, the child asked him if he knew that there was a girl outside their door who could not get home. Glancing out the window, he saw the girl standing across the street. Turning back to the child, the bartender asked him how he knew this. The child replied "That on this night of all nights, if one could be home, they'd be already there."

The bartender looked back toward the young woman as he reflected on what the child had said. After several seconds of thought, he slowly went over to the cash register and removing most of the money, came out from behind the bar and followed the child across the street. Everyone in the bar watched as he spoke with the girl. After a few moments, he called over a cab, put the girl inside and told the driver: "J.F.K. Airport." As the cab pulled away, he looked around for the child, but the child was gone. And what was stranger still, even though his own tracks leading from the bar were still clearly marked in the snow, the child's were nowhere to be found. Returning back inside, he asked if anyone had seen where the child had gone, but like himself, no one had, for they also had been watching the departing cab. And then, some would later say that the most miraculous thing of all happened, when for the rest of the night, no one paid for a drink.

Later that night, the angel returned back to heaven and placed in the Lord's hand the wish of a soul for the happiness of another. And as the heavenly host looked on, the Lord smiled.

THE SPIDER AND THE CHRIST CHILD

~by Elizabeth Houghton

He was the littlest spider in all his family. Yet he could run faster than any of them. He was always playing hide-and-seek. In and out of holes, under tables and chairs. Up the walls he'd race. So fast and little was he, indeed, that nobody could catch him.

"I shall teach you how to weave," said his mother. "Then perhaps you'll keep out of mischief. Idle hands do no good. You must learn that life is not all play."

Soon the littlest spider was weaving great and beautiful webs. He covered the high corners of the walls with intricately woven silk webs. He created lovely creations, larger and faster than anyone else could weave them.

"Such beautiful webs!" exclaimed his mother proudly. "God has given you a great gift. I hope someday you will use it to benefit others."

One cold winter day the littlest spider went for a walk alone. He wandered across the cold hillsides and fields. He traveled far and wide, down bleak Judean roads. He met some people. The man was leading a donkey, on which sat a young and beautiful woman. She was holding an infant close to her heart.

"Joseph," said the mother, "I am tired. May we rest here for a while?" The man looked anxiously up and down the road. No one was in sight. "There is a small cave close by," he told her. "There you will be cut off from the wind and cold. Come!"

As they reached the cave they were startled to hear hoofbeats in the distance. "Herod's soldiers are coming to find our Babe," sobbed the mother. "They will kill our Little One!" She covered the infant with her shawl. Hurriedly, they entered the cave. The littlest spider watched, then stood guard at the entrance. As the soldiers approached, he began to weave a web back and forth, to and fro, across the opening. He worked so swiftly that by the time the soldiers reached the cave a fine and beautiful web completely covered the entrance.

"No use looking in there," one of the soldiers remarked, eyeing the web. "Evidently no one has been in the cave for a long time. The web would have been broken had anyone entered." So they continued hastily on their way. And the Holy Family rested in peace and safety.

When the littlest spider told his mother what he had done she was very pleased. "God gave you the gift to work fast and well. You have used your gift to save the Christ Child."

It’s getting so close to Christmas. I watched the news today, and my heart went out to more people suffering from acts of hate and violence. I asked myself once again, “How do we find joy in a season of chaos?” It isn’t easy, but we have to choose joy.  Jesus is the only source of true joy and love. John 17:13 states "And now come I to thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves." In John 13:11 we read "These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full". In Romans 15:13 we read, Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost. We may not be able to change our circumstances, but we can choose to change our attitude.  We can fill our homes with joy and love. We have to make a conscious effort. ~~ Marilee

M & M Poem

As you hold these candies in your hand

And turn them, you will see

The 'M' becomes a 'W',

An 'E', and then a '3'.

They tell the Christmas Story--

I'm sure it's one you know.

It took place in a stable

A long, long time ago.

The 'E' is for the East,

Where the star shone so bright.

The 'M' is for the Manger,

where the Baby Jesus slept at night.

The '3' is for the Wisemen,

Bearing gifts, with which they came.

'W' is for Worship,

Hallelujah! Praise His Name!

So as you eat these candies

Or share them with a friend,

Remember the meaning of Christmas:

It's a love that never ends.

LIGHT UP YOUR HOLIDAY -

1 Corinthians 13, Christmas Version

If I decorate my house perfectly with plaid bows, strands of twinkling lights and shiny balls, but do not show love to my family, I'm just another decorator.

If I slave away in the kitchen, baking dozens of Christmas cookies, preparing gourmet meals and arranging a beautifully adorned table at mealtime, but do not show love to my family, I'm just another cook.

If I work at the soup kitchen, carol in the nursing home and give all that I have to charity, but do not show love to my family, it profits me nothing.

If I trim the spruce with shimmering angels and crocheted snowflakes, attend a myriad of holiday parties and sing in the choir's cantata but do not focus on those I love the most, I have missed the point.

Love stops the cooking to hug the child.

Love sets aside the decorating to kiss the husband/wife

Love is kind, though harried and tired.

Love doesn't envy another's home that has coordinated Christmas china and table linens.

Love doesn't yell at the kids to get out of the way, but is thankful they are there to be in the way.

Love doesn't give only to those who are able to give in return but rejoices in giving to those who can't.

Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails.

Video games will break, pearl necklaces will be lost, golf clubs will rust.

But the gift of love will endure.

And the word

John 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

Crock pot candy

https://www.thepioneerwoman.com/food-cooking/recipes/a41805069/crock-pot-candy-recipe/

2 Tbsp. unsalted butter, diced

16 oz. almond bark

12 oz.  bag semi-sweet chocolate chips
10 oz. dark chocolate chips
10 oz. peanut butter chips
3 c. salted, roasted peanuts
1 1/2 c. lightly crushed, ridged potato chips
1 1/2 c. crushed pretzel twists or skinny sticks
1 c. red and green coated candies, such as M&Ms, optional
1/4 c. sprinkles (optional)

Chop the almond bark into pieces about the size of the chocolate chips.

Add the almond bark, semi-sweet, dark, and peanut butter chips to the slow cooker. Cover with a lid and cook on high for 30 minutes. Remove the lid and stir to combine. Reduce the heat to low and cook for another 10 to 20 minutes, stirring every 10 minutes, until all of the chips are melted. Reduce the slow cooker temperature to hold warm. Gently stir in the peanuts, potato chips, and pretzels.

Line 3 sheet trays with parchment paper. Using a spoon, drop mounded scoops (about 1 1/2 tablespoons each) onto the sheet trays, about 1 inch apart (the candies will spread and settle a little once dropped). Gently press 3 to 5 coated candies into the top of each piece of candy and sprinkle with sprinkles, if desired.

Let rest at room temperature until firm, 30 to 45 minutes.

I woke up about 1:30 this morning convinced that there was a mouse at least 5 feet tall eating my kitchen cupboards!  I couldn’t move.  I couldn't make a sound.  I couldn’t wake my husband up to go catch it.  All I could do was lay in bed in the darkness and fear the unknown.  I needed light. There was only darkness around me.  Then I remembered God saying, "Let there be light" and my fear was gone. In Proverbs 15:30, we read that the light of the eyes cheers the heart, and good news nourishes the bones. Another translation says that Light in a messenger’s eyes brings joy to the heart, and good news gives health to the bones. A third translation says that a cheerful look brings joy to the heart; good news makes for good health.  Joy. Finding joy. I’ve heard those words somewhere recently.  Joy comes from Jesus Christ.  The Light of Christ is the divine energy or power that proceeds from God through Christ and gives life and light to all things. ~~  Marilee

THE CHRISTMAS CANDLE LEGEND

During the Christmas holidays the many decorations which adorn the windows and doors of homes are truly things of beauty. Each candle, seen in so many of our windows at this beautiful season of the year, tells an inspiring story.

Many years ago in a tidy little cottage on the edge of a village in Austria, a cobbler and his wife made their home. Their possessions were far from plentiful; but in spite of that, they shared what they had with others. Symbolic of their love and generosity for their fellowman was the lighted candle that they placed in the window of their humble cottage.

Over a number of years war, along with its companions, famine and destruction, fell upon the land. This little village suffered; yet, through it all, the cobbler and his wife suffered less than the others.

The villagers were puzzled about this and talked among themselves. "Surely, there is something special about them," they said. "They are always spared from our misfortune. Let us put a candle in our window and see if that is the mysterious charm."

It so happened that the first night a candle was lighted in the window of every home was Christmas Eve. Before the first rays of the morning sun showed over the horizon, a messenger rode into the village to bring the great news: peace had come to the land.  That Christmas Day there was amazement and awe in the hearts of the humble villagers. And, as they thanked God for the blessings of peace, they said to one another, "Let us always remember to light candles on the evening of Christ's birth."

Many years have passed since this beautiful custom of placing a lighted candle in the window on Christmas Eve occurred. The custom has spread all over the world, sending forth a message of love, hope and cheer.

Luke 2:20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.

Many years ago, I worked for a woman who had a metal can in her office. On the can was written the words “Success Comes In Cans”. The can itself was full of positive thoughts about success. We were encouraged to read the thoughts and apply them in our work. I thought about using that concept "Christmas Success Coming In Cans" as a way to increase the joy we feel at this time of year. I can’t do anything about the world, but I can reach out and touch my family.  Each of us can make a difference in our families. I thought of suggestions I could put in a can. Here are a few: 1) Put the saying on a can, put in ideas which could be done like:   Make a bed, do a chore, read a book to a child,  sit down and color, smile, let your sibling go first.  Add your change to the can or go without extras and put that money in. Finally pray with your family for a Christ-centered activity you can use the money for. A few examples might be buying fingernail polish and supplies and going to a care center and give handrubs and manicures. It could be warm socks, personal hygiene items for a crisis center. Make your decision based on the thought “what would Jesus do? For your family, give presents from your heart.  You know your family, you know their hearts. Increase the joy~~ Marilee

The Carol that Never was Sung

by Alfred Hassler

The first Christmas Eve, of course, was a very important event. The birthday of the Child called for the biggest celebration the heavenly hosts had ever had. Even the Carols, held in reserve for ages for some really special event, would be sung.

The choir was to be one of Heaven's very best, with some exceptionally rich angelic tenors and basses brought in from the glee club to help out. All the stars had been rubbed with a special polish, and one brand-new star added just for the occasion. The Carols were quite puffed up with pride and excitement and they all promised solemnly to be on hand in plenty of time.

On the great night, everything went off fine. The stars shone as they had never shone before; the angel choir outdid itself in songs of joy, and the Carols were a great success. There was only one little flaw, and hardly anyone even noticed it. One of the Carols didn't get there in time.

In fact, it didn't get there at all. It was quite a sweet Carol, the angels singers told each other a little sadly. It had been a pity not to have sung it.

The Carol was very penitent. It had stopped on the way, it explained vaguely. Something had got its attention, and it had stopped, and been late. Questioning by the choirmaster produced little more. The Carol got vaguer and vaguer as the questions became sharper and sharper. Only one thing it seemed sure of.

It would never happen again, the Carol promised. But it did, every year. And finally, when nearly twenty long centuries had gone by with the last Carol still not sung, they brought the situation to the Throne Room. There they explained more in sorrow than in anger, about the Carol that was always late. Then, at a sign, they left, and the last Carol was summoned. The Last Carol was ashamed and frightened and hung its head as it stood in the Throne Room and explained with no more vagueness, why it had been late.

Each year had been something different, it admitted. Sometimes it had been a man in a dungeon. Often it had been men and women whose spirits had fallen low in the face of great obstacles, whose faith in love was almost extinguished and who could not join in the rejoicing over the Child's birthday.

Always, explained the Carol simply, it had seemed important to stop with these for awhile, and somehow it had always meant being late. "But next year …” began the Carol, but the voice from the Throne interrupted.

"Next year," said the Voice, "you will do as you have done next year and for many years to come. For you are the Carol that must be voiceless until all men sing together in a mighty chorus that covers the earth. Only in the hearts of men who have seen the vision," said the voice, "can you hone; the Child, until all men love each other as He loved them. "

"Then," said the Carol wistfully, "must I be silent forever?"

"Not so," said the Voice, and the full choir of angels had never sounded so richly majestic. "They flee from it in fear and greed, but with their fear there is a shame, and through their greed shines love. One day they will cast out their fear and let love lead them into the rich habitation I have prepared for them. Then," said the Voice, "all men will join in singing the sweetest carol of all ... THE SONG OF UNIVERSAL, BROTHERHOOD."

And this shall

Luke 2:12-14

12 And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.

13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,

14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

At physical therapy this morning, I talked with my therapist who mentioned that it just doesn’t feel like Christmas this year.  No one seems happy that it’s coming.  He said that last night, as his family knelt for prayers, his son prayed that Heavenly Father would make it snow so that it would feel like Christmas.  He says it doesn’t and he wants it to come.  I’ve watched a little TV this Christmas season and have found many ads proclaiming a joyful Christmas can be found by “buying” their company's particular item.  If you want to make sure your daughter loves you, buy her a certain necklace.   She will cry from joy.  If you want your neighborhood destructive monster to be happy, buy him some new shoes and then help him smash decorations.  In a year that encourages you to buy things that will help you find joy; remember that true joy can’t be purchased by anyone.  No hand-operated drone, remote control car, not even the latest cell phone can begin to fill the spot in our hearts where Jesus belongs.  Pure joy and happiness came into our world with the birth of a baby boy.  Joy was bought and paid for on a cross.  To find joy, see what kind of gifts you can offer Him.  ~~ Marilee

The Story of the Four Candles

extracted from  http://jsmagic.net/xmashope/

The Four Candles burned slowly.

Their ambiance was so soft you could hear them speak...

The first candle said, "I Am Peace, but these days, nobody wants to keep me lit."

Then Peace's flame slowly diminished and went out completely.

The second candle said, "I Am Faith, but these days, I am no longer indispensable."

Then Faith's flame slowly diminished and went out completely.

Sadly the third candle spoke, "I Am Love and I haven't the strength to stay lit any longer."

"People put me aside and don't understand my importance.

They even forget to love those who are nearest to them."

And waiting no longer, Love went out completely.

Suddenly...

A child entered the room and saw the three candles no longer burning.

The child began to cry,

"Why are you not burning?  You are supposed to stay lit until the end."

Then the Fourth Candle spoke gently to the little boy,

"Don't be afraid, for I Am Hope, and while I still burn, we can re-light the other candles."

With shining eyes, the child took the Candle of Hope and lit the other three candles.

Never let the Flame of Hope go out.

With Hope in your life, no matter how bad things may be,

Peace, Faith and Love may shine brightly once again.

And the Angel

 Luke 2:10-11

10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.

11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

In something that they never got to see

You were not there in Bethlehem

But, if you feel the spirit in the air

I apologize for not having a blog entry yesterday.  I had computer problems and my mind was just too tired to fight my way through them.  I guess that happens to those of us who are more technically challenged than others.  Thank you for your supportive comments last night.  I appreciated them.  i was frustrated, but the joy is back.  Yesterday at church, we had 2 speakers who each talked about Christmas past and present.  As they were talking, I pictured myself sitting on a donkey or walking by its side on the road to Bethlehem.  Bethlehem was a small city and probably did not have many Inns located there.  Most people stayed with family when they traveled, but Bethlehem was filled with people who came to be counted and to be taxed.  There was no shelter, no roof overhead for Mary and Joseph.   Instead, a humble spot was found, away from the people and the congestion.  A place where Mary could deliver her baby and the shepherds could come to see Him.  I don't imagine they would have been welcomed in the Inn.  The night of His birth, that stable would have been filled with joy.  It did not matter the circumstances.  The only thing which mattered was the joy which filled the stable, the manger, Mary and Joseph, and the shepherds, and any others who came and saw their King.  I have included "Joseph's Song" by Michael Card several times, but once again, here is the link

I hope all goes well for each of you and that you know, regardless of the circumstances, joy is possible through Our lord and Savior Jesus Christ. ~~ Marilee

THE EXPECTED GUEST

~ Anne Mccolum Boyles

There once lived in the city of Marseilles an old shoemaker, loved and honored by his neighbors, who affectionately called him Father Martin.

One Christmas Eve as he sat alone in his little shop reading of the visit of the wise men to the infant Jesus, and of the gifts they brought, he said to himself: If tomorrow were the first Christmas, and if this Jesus were to be born in Marseilles this night, I know what I would give him!  He rose from his stool and took from a shelf overhead two tiny shoes of softest snow-white leather, with bright silver buckles. I would give him these, my finest work. Then he paused and reflected. But I am a foolish old man. The Master has no need of my poor gifts.

Replacing the shoes, he blew out the candle and retired to rest. Hardly had he closed his eyes, it seemed, when he heard a voice call his name.  'Martin! Martin!' Intuitively he felt a presence. Then the voice spoke. 'You have wished to see me. Tomorrow I shall pass your window.  If you see me, and bid me enter, I shall be a guest at your table.'

Father Martin did not sleep that night for joy. Before it was dawn, he rose and swept and tidied up his little shop. He spread fresh sand on the floor, and wreathed green boughs of fir along the rafters. On the spotless linen covered table he placed a loaf of white bread, a jar of honey and a pitcher of milk. When all was ready he took up his vigil at the window. Presently an old street sweeper passed by, blowing upon his thin, gnarled hands to warm them. 'Poor fellow, he must be half frozen' he thought. 'Come in my friend and warm yourself and drink something hot.' And the man gratefully accepted. An hour passed and Martin saw a young, miserably clothed woman, carrying a baby. She paused wearily to rest in the shelter of his doorway. The heart of the old cobbler was touched. Quickly he flung open the door. 'Come in and warm while you rest. You do not look well.'

'I am going to the hospital. I hope they will take me in, and my baby boy. My husband is at sea and I am ill, without money.'

'Poor child,' cried Martin. 'You must eat something while you are getting warm. No? Then let me give a cup of milk to the little one. Ah! What a bright pretty fellow he is! Why, you have put no shoes on him!'

'I have no shoes for him.' sighed the mother. 'Then he shall have this lovely pair I finished yesterday." And Martin took down from the shelf the soft little white shoes he had admired the night before. He slipped them on the child's feet ... they fit perfectly. And shortly the poor young mother went on her way, some coins in her hand and tearful with gratitude. And Martin resumed his post by the window. Hour after hour went by and although people passed his window, and many needy souls shared the hospitality of the old cobbler, the expected Guest did not appear. It was only a dream he sighed with heavy heart. I did hope and believe, but He has not come.

Suddenly, so it seemed to his weary eyes, the room was flooded with a strange light. And to the cobbler's astonished vision there appeared before him, one by one the poor street sweeper, the sick mother and child, and all the other people whom he had aided during the day. And  each smiled at him and said: 'have you not seen me? Did I not sit at your table?' And they vanished from view.

At last out of the silence Father Martin heard again the gentle voice repeating the old familiar words: 'Whosoever shall receive one such in my name, receiveth me ... for I was hungered, and ye gave me meat; I was thirsty and ye gave me drink; I was a stranger and ye took me in ... inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it to me.'
